QUILT EXPLANATION

Các bạn thân mến,
Tuần này, Ngân Hà mời các bạn đọc bài luận văn bằng tiếng Anh của Elizabeth Kim Trang Lê viết nạp ở trường. Bài này đã do chính Kim Trang dịch ra tiếng Việt gửi dự thi, được đăng trong tuần vưa rồi với tựa đề “Bức Tranh Toàn Cảnh”.

On my quilt, you see two flags on the top and bottom corner. These two flags represent me as an Asian American. I am Vietnamese and was born in an American country. I am a full-blooded Vietnamese. My parents are also pure Vietnamese.

The two landscapes of Vietnam near the top of my quilt repesent my mom and dad’s native land. That was where my parents grew up as a child. My dad grew up in a place called Ben Tre. Ben Tre is famous for their coconut trees and its products, such as coconut candy. My mom’s home land is in Nha Be. Nha Be is known for its ever-stretching and beautiful river. The pictures are near the top because that represents how I am here today. Those places kind of represent my second homes.

Somehow, I feel like a part of me belongs in those places. Therefore, one day, I would like to travel and visit my parent’ hometown. The picture of the beach with the palm tree represents my passion to go to the beach. I just think that it is the most beautiful and fun place to “hang around” with my friends or family. Also, the beach reminds me of my wonderful memories with my friends from tutoring over the summer.

The picture of my family in the center of my quilt represents me the most. I would never be anything without them. They will always be there to support me and listen to my problems. My family is also like teachers to me. They tell me things that I can never learn in school. My family is like my friends, only blood-related. The bed represents my lazy summer/ weekend days. I love to sleep because I love what goes on in my dreams, all the madness and craziness. I LOVE to sleep in when there’s no  school. It also represents that I am laidback and usually calm.

The pharmacist on the top  left corner represents my future career job. I want to be a pharmacist because it seems easier than being a doctor or lawyer. Also, I heard from my parents that a pharmacist makes quite a lot of money. But I am still not exactly sure about what I want to be when I grow up.

The picture of my nieces and nephews are the “babie” of the family. They bring fun and a smile to everyone in my family. I enjoy talking to them and listening to them talk back with their cute way of saying things.

Next to that picture is a picture of a throne and crown. The throne and the crown represent how I got my last name, Le. My last name comes from a Vietnamese emperor named Le Dai Hanh. He was able to defeat a small country called “Chiem Thanh” and made it a part of Vietnam. The Le dynasty was able to go on for 3 generations. Then, I have a picture of an airplane. This picture represents that I love to travel to different places. I love to learn about the new environment and look at beautiful landscapes. So far, my mom has promised to take me someplace out of the state every year for summer. One day, I would like to fly to Hawaii or Florida and enjoy their tropical atmosphere. Last but not least, is the chocolate bar. This is a symbol for my love of food. I love to eat, from healthy to junk. I love to eat both Vietnamese cuisine and American food. Whether it’s a simple snack bag to a plate of thick and juicy steak, I still love it. The only foods that I dislike are broccoli, mushrooms, weird types of meat (snake, turtle, dog, cat, mouse, ect…), raw carrots, olives and food with raw meat such as sushi.

Từ khi em còn bé, học tiếng Việt đối với em lúc nào cũng vui. Em đã nói chuyện với bố mẹ bằng tiếng Việt từ lúc em bập bẹ biết nói.
Con học tập giỏi và có đạo đức tốt là niềm kiêu hãnh và hạnh phúc lớn của ba mẹ, các cháu hiểu được niềm mong ước của mẹ cha, hiểu được sự nhọc nhằn của ba má lo sinh kế gia đình, lo lắng dạy dỗ con sao cho thành người có ích cho xã hội và nhất là luôn nhớ đến cội nguồn dân tộc.
Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa có hai anh em mồ côi mẹ, bị bà dì ghẻ vốn là một phù thủy hành hạ tàn nhẫn. Người anh cùng em gái bỏ trốn khỏi nhà, bị bà dì ghẻ đi theo ám hại.
“Nhiều lần em đã được hỏi: Nữa lớn lên con muốn làm nghề gì?” “Dạ, con có hai mong ước. Một là làm bác sĩ trẻ em. Hai là trở thành một cầu thủ bóng đá chuyên nghiệp. Muốn giúp cho các em vui vẻ, khỏa mạnh nhưng ý muốn làm một cầu thủ bóng đá chuyên nghiệp đã thôi thúc em nhiều hơn. Bảo Trân đã chơi môn bóng đá được 4 năm rồi. Bắt đầu 6 tuổi Bảo Trân đã gia nhập hội bóng đá của FC Premier và Slammer FC. Muốn làm một người cầu thủ giỏi thì phải tập luyện rất nhiều giờ.
Bài của cô giáo Võ Minh Nguyệt, giáo viên lớp 4 Trường Việt Ngữ Trung Tâm Văn Hóa Hồng Bàng. Và đây là những câu ca dao, lục bát viết ở thể thơ 6/8 mộc mạc, chân chất, lột tả mọi sinh hoạt thường ngày là thể loại rất phổ biến trong dân gian.
Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa có hai anh em mồ côi mẹ, sống với cha và mụ dì ghẻ độc ác. Chịu không nổi roi đòn, hai anh em bỏ trốn khỏi nhà và bị mụ phù thủy đi theo ám hại. Khi chịu khát không nổi, uống nước ở con suối thứ ba, người anh biến thành một con Mang. Cô em gái tìm được một căn nhà nhỏ trong rừng, lo chăm sóc và nuôi anh. Đang sống yên ổn thì một hôm vua và đoàn đi săn đến làm náo loạn cả khu rừng. Người anh, lúc đó là một con Mang muốn tham dự cuộc săn, em gái khuyên răn thế nào cũng không được, sau cùng, em gái phải chìu anh...
Các bạn thiếu nhi thân mến, Hôm nay, mẹ đem về cho Bảo Ngọc cuốn “Đức Phật Với Tuổi Thơ”, The Buddha With Children, mặc dù BN đã ra ngoài tuổi thơ, nhưng cầm cuốn sách trên tay, tuổi thơ lại ào ạt trở về và ánh mắt mẹ lại chập chùng với ánh mắt từ bi của đức Phật.
