QUILT EXPLANATION

Các bạn thân mến,
Tuần này, Ngân Hà mời các bạn đọc bài luận văn bằng tiếng Anh của Elizabeth Kim Trang Lê viết nạp ở trường. Bài này đã do chính Kim Trang dịch ra tiếng Việt gửi dự thi, được đăng trong tuần vưa rồi với tựa đề “Bức Tranh Toàn Cảnh”.

On my quilt, you see two flags on the top and bottom corner. These two flags represent me as an Asian American. I am Vietnamese and was born in an American country. I am a full-blooded Vietnamese. My parents are also pure Vietnamese.

The two landscapes of Vietnam near the top of my quilt repesent my mom and dad’s native land. That was where my parents grew up as a child. My dad grew up in a place called Ben Tre. Ben Tre is famous for their coconut trees and its products, such as coconut candy. My mom’s home land is in Nha Be. Nha Be is known for its ever-stretching and beautiful river. The pictures are near the top because that represents how I am here today. Those places kind of represent my second homes.

Somehow, I feel like a part of me belongs in those places. Therefore, one day, I would like to travel and visit my parent’ hometown. The picture of the beach with the palm tree represents my passion to go to the beach. I just think that it is the most beautiful and fun place to “hang around” with my friends or family. Also, the beach reminds me of my wonderful memories with my friends from tutoring over the summer.

The picture of my family in the center of my quilt represents me the most. I would never be anything without them. They will always be there to support me and listen to my problems. My family is also like teachers to me. They tell me things that I can never learn in school. My family is like my friends, only blood-related. The bed represents my lazy summer/ weekend days. I love to sleep because I love what goes on in my dreams, all the madness and craziness. I LOVE to sleep in when there’s no  school. It also represents that I am laidback and usually calm.

The pharmacist on the top  left corner represents my future career job. I want to be a pharmacist because it seems easier than being a doctor or lawyer. Also, I heard from my parents that a pharmacist makes quite a lot of money. But I am still not exactly sure about what I want to be when I grow up.

The picture of my nieces and nephews are the “babie” of the family. They bring fun and a smile to everyone in my family. I enjoy talking to them and listening to them talk back with their cute way of saying things.

Next to that picture is a picture of a throne and crown. The throne and the crown represent how I got my last name, Le. My last name comes from a Vietnamese emperor named Le Dai Hanh. He was able to defeat a small country called “Chiem Thanh” and made it a part of Vietnam. The Le dynasty was able to go on for 3 generations. Then, I have a picture of an airplane. This picture represents that I love to travel to different places. I love to learn about the new environment and look at beautiful landscapes. So far, my mom has promised to take me someplace out of the state every year for summer. One day, I would like to fly to Hawaii or Florida and enjoy their tropical atmosphere. Last but not least, is the chocolate bar. This is a symbol for my love of food. I love to eat, from healthy to junk. I love to eat both Vietnamese cuisine and American food. Whether it’s a simple snack bag to a plate of thick and juicy steak, I still love it. The only foods that I dislike are broccoli, mushrooms, weird types of meat (snake, turtle, dog, cat, mouse, ect…), raw carrots, olives and food with raw meat such as sushi.

Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa trong vườn thượng uyển của một ông vua nọ có một cây táo kết trái vàng. Nhưng cứ sau một đêm, cây táo lại mất đi một trái. Vua sai hoàng tử cả, rồi hoàng tử thứ đi canh, nhưng sau 12 giờ, cả hai không cưỡng được giấc ngủ, nên táo vẫn bị mất như thường. Đến lúc hoàng tử Út canh giữ, thì phát hiện có một con chim vàng tới tha quả táo.
Năm nay, có nhiều bạn vì bận rộn với niên học mới, muốn học tiếng Việt mà chưa biết phải ghi danh, thủ tục như thế nào, thời gian đã quá trễ không? Bảo Ngọc xin mách các bạn Trung Tâm Việt Ngữ Hồng Bàng.
Mới đây em được ba mẹ dẫn đi dự một chương trình Tết Trung Thu, do hội đồng hương, nơi thành phố trước đây ba mẹ em sống ở Việt Nam. Rồi di cư sang Mỹ, những người cùng ở thành phố gặp nhau, thành ra có một cái hội. Cứ khi Tết đến hay những ngày lễ là ba mẹ em dẫn con cái đi theo.
Năm nay, trong chương trình tôi không theo các em cùng lên lớp mà phụ trách dạy lớp mới của các em vào lớp hai. Lớp mới này đông hơn, tôi rất vui vì biết rằng mỗi năm, phụ huynh cho con cái đi học tiếng Việt nhiều hơn.
Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa có một ông vua cho làm một vườn thượng uyển có nhiều cây trái quí, nhất là cây táo kết trái vàng. Nhưng khi cây kết trái cứ mỗi ngày lại mất đi một quả táo. Vua sai người con cả ra canh, cậu không chống lại cơn buồn ngủ nên ngày hôm sau vẫn mất một trái, hôm sau đến người con thứ thì cũng xẩy ra trường hợp như người con cả...
Năm nay em đã vào lớp năm trường Mỹ và lớp Bốn trường Việt. Cả hai trường đều đã khai giảng và em đều đi học. Bỏ những ngày Hè, em cũng tiết (tiếc), nhưng đi học thì có cái vui khác.
Các bạn thân mến, Trời đã bắt đầu vào thu, tuy còn những ngày nắng ấm, nhưng buổi sáng sớm và chiều tối đã se lạnh. Lại trong mùa đi học, các bạn nhớ mặc ấm và ăn uống điều độ để có sức mà theo kịp bạn bè.
Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa có một ông vua cho làm một vườn ngự uyển trồng rất nhiều hoa lạ và cây trái. Trong vườn có một cây táo kết trái vàng nhưng cứ một ngày là mất một quả. Vua sai người con cả ra canh, đến nửa đêm không cản lại cơn buồn ngủ, và hôm sau mất một trái táo vàng. Đến người con thứ hai cũng không cưỡng được cơn buồn ngủ như anh, và lại mất thêm một trái.
