QUILT EXPLANATION

Các bạn thân mến,
Tuần này, Ngân Hà mời các bạn đọc bài luận văn bằng tiếng Anh của Elizabeth Kim Trang Lê viết nạp ở trường. Bài này đã do chính Kim Trang dịch ra tiếng Việt gửi dự thi, được đăng trong tuần vưa rồi với tựa đề “Bức Tranh Toàn Cảnh”.

On my quilt, you see two flags on the top and bottom corner. These two flags represent me as an Asian American. I am Vietnamese and was born in an American country. I am a full-blooded Vietnamese. My parents are also pure Vietnamese.

The two landscapes of Vietnam near the top of my quilt repesent my mom and dad’s native land. That was where my parents grew up as a child. My dad grew up in a place called Ben Tre. Ben Tre is famous for their coconut trees and its products, such as coconut candy. My mom’s home land is in Nha Be. Nha Be is known for its ever-stretching and beautiful river. The pictures are near the top because that represents how I am here today. Those places kind of represent my second homes.

Somehow, I feel like a part of me belongs in those places. Therefore, one day, I would like to travel and visit my parent’ hometown. The picture of the beach with the palm tree represents my passion to go to the beach. I just think that it is the most beautiful and fun place to “hang around” with my friends or family. Also, the beach reminds me of my wonderful memories with my friends from tutoring over the summer.

The picture of my family in the center of my quilt represents me the most. I would never be anything without them. They will always be there to support me and listen to my problems. My family is also like teachers to me. They tell me things that I can never learn in school. My family is like my friends, only blood-related. The bed represents my lazy summer/ weekend days. I love to sleep because I love what goes on in my dreams, all the madness and craziness. I LOVE to sleep in when there’s no  school. It also represents that I am laidback and usually calm.

The pharmacist on the top  left corner represents my future career job. I want to be a pharmacist because it seems easier than being a doctor or lawyer. Also, I heard from my parents that a pharmacist makes quite a lot of money. But I am still not exactly sure about what I want to be when I grow up.

The picture of my nieces and nephews are the “babie” of the family. They bring fun and a smile to everyone in my family. I enjoy talking to them and listening to them talk back with their cute way of saying things.

Next to that picture is a picture of a throne and crown. The throne and the crown represent how I got my last name, Le. My last name comes from a Vietnamese emperor named Le Dai Hanh. He was able to defeat a small country called “Chiem Thanh” and made it a part of Vietnam. The Le dynasty was able to go on for 3 generations. Then, I have a picture of an airplane. This picture represents that I love to travel to different places. I love to learn about the new environment and look at beautiful landscapes. So far, my mom has promised to take me someplace out of the state every year for summer. One day, I would like to fly to Hawaii or Florida and enjoy their tropical atmosphere. Last but not least, is the chocolate bar. This is a symbol for my love of food. I love to eat, from healthy to junk. I love to eat both Vietnamese cuisine and American food. Whether it’s a simple snack bag to a plate of thick and juicy steak, I still love it. The only foods that I dislike are broccoli, mushrooms, weird types of meat (snake, turtle, dog, cat, mouse, ect…), raw carrots, olives and food with raw meat such as sushi.

Chúng ta đang vào phần hai của bệnh trầm cảm ở trẻ em. Một số trẻ em bị bệnh trầm cảm nhưng vì thiếu ý của gia đình, phụ huynh, đưa dẫn các em đến hậu quả trầm trọng. Trong phần hai, chúng ta cùng tìm hiểu nguyên nhân của căn bệnh.
Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa có hai anh em, người anh thì lanh lẹ, việc gì cũng làm được, nhưng nhát gan, nghe chuyện ma quỷ là sợ đến rùng mình, sởn gáy. Người em thì khờ khạo, thấy anh rùng mình nên chỉ muốn học nghề rùng mình. Một người coi nhà thờ đem anh về dạy, nhát ma, bị anh xô té xuống gác chuông gãy chân. Người cha giận lắm, cho anh năm mươi đồng tiền, đuổi ra kkỏi nhà. Anh theo người đánh xe ngựa ra đi. Một hôm ở nhà trọ anh nghe chuyện ở lâu đài nọ nhiều ma, ai vào cũng bị ma giết chết nên nhà vua có lệnh, người nào vào đó trong ba đêm mà được yên lành, vua sẽ gã con gái cho. Vậy là anh xin đi. Đêm đầu anh đã thắng lũ ma. Và đến đêm thứ hai... (còn nữa)
Thôi chị đừng nói chuyện súng đạn ở trường nữa, nghe vừa sợ hãi vừa nhức đầu! Thiệt tình có lúc em sợ quá, không muốn đến trường nữa. Cái thời này là thời gì vậy chị, sao súng nổ trong trường nhiều quá! Nhưng bây giờ đang mùa hè, không phải đến trường, em rất thoải mái và chỉ muốn nói chuyện về mùa Hè!
Khi con lớn lên con sẽ là cô giáo dạy vẽ, vì con rất thích vẽ nhiều nhất. Con thích vẽ từ khi con ba tuổi, bây giờ con đã tám tuổi, con cũng còn thích vẽ nữa. Những con thú con thích là con chó, con ngựa và con bướm.
Hôm nay, Tường Chinh muốn trình bày với quý vị phụ huynh, quý em, quý thầy cô một bệnh khác mà trẻ em thường bị mắc phải, đó là bệnh trầm cảm. Bệnh này khó nhận biết ở trẻ nhưng nguy hiểm hơn bệnh tự kỷ hay bệnh rối loạn tăng động mà Tường Chinh đã trình bày trong những lần trước.
Tóm tắt: Ngày xưa có hai anh em trai, người anh siêng năng, giỏi giang, việc gì cũng làm được, chỉ là bị nhát gan, nghe chuyện ma quỷ thì sợ đến rùng mình, nổi gai ốc. Người em ngu ngốc, khờ khạo, chẳng biết sợ là gì. Thấy anh nhát gan, nghe chuyện ma quỷ sợ phát rùng mình, thì cậu em muốn đi học nghề rùng mình.
Chương trình tiếng Việt tại Đại Học UCI bắt đầu vào năm 2000. Tôi về lại ngôi trường mà sáu năm về trước tôi là sinh viên, lần này để bắt tay vào gầy dựng một học trình mới mẻ trong khoa Ngôn Ngữ và Văn Chương Đông Á.
Con năm nay 9 tuổi học lớp 4 trường Mỹ và lớp 2 trường Việt Ngữ mỗi ngày Chủ Nhật. Con còn biết múa và hát tiếng Việt. Ở nhà con nói tiếng Việt với ông bà nội và ông bà ngoại nên ông bà thích lắm.
